Catheters to Ease Treatment for Children at the Oncology Institute

The The Nacional Vida Segura Foundation will donate 60 catheters to children receiving care at the Instituto Oncológico del Oriente Boliviano. This initiative aligns with the foundation’s mission to safeguard health and enhance the quality of life for patients.

Dr. Masiel Delgadillo, a pediatric hemato-oncologist and head of the hospital’s pediatric department, explained the significance of the device:
“The catheter is placed in a larger vein, allowing for the administration of treatments such as chemotherapy for children with cancer.”

She further emphasized the impact of the donation: “Nacional Vida Segura Foundation has provided catheters for children with cancer. These devices will enable many patients requiring extended treatment—up to two years in some cases—to receive their therapy more efficiently and comfortably.”

Pediatric surgeon Dr. Limberg Guarachi highlighted the benefits of the catheter, noting that it not only facilitates medical procedures but also reduces the number of needle insertions children must endure.
“This device spares the child repeated punctures in their arms and allows them to use their hands freely during hospitalization,” he explained.

In this region, the high cost of catheters makes them unaffordable for many low-income families. By donating these devices, the foundation is helping alleviate pain and making the hospital stay less burdensome for young oncology patients.
